2016 Local Government Elections Launches

Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) chief electoral officer Mosotho Moepya says they are ready for the upcoming 2016 Local Government Elections.

The IEC offficially launched the 2016 municipal elections at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand on 14 January 2016.

The 2016 elections are set to be highly contested as they come at a time when ordinary South Africans are protesting against poor service delivery.

Moepya says 25 million voters have already been registered. The highly anticipated municipal elections are scheduled to take place between May and August.

Local Government Action (LGA) is an NGO that focuses on ensuring that local government is accountable, follows correct democratic processes and observes the Constitution. The organisation empowers people by providing them with information about their rights and what the role of local government is. It also has advice on what steps should be taken if local government fails to deliver. LGA and other civil society organisations will be working to ensure that the electorate understands the power of the vote and develops ways of holding councillors accountable once they have been elected.
