Class Action Silicosis Case Backed By NGOs Continues

SECTION27, Treatment Action Campaign and Sonke Gender Justice support workers in their class action lawsuit against mining companies.

In October last year, former mine workers took 30 mining companies to court alleging that over-exposure to silica dust when they working for the companies had caused them to develop Tuberculosis and Silicosis.

A year later, in November 2015, the case continues. The workers - and the NGOs supporting them: SECTION27, TAC and Sonke Gender Justice - believe that the case presented vindicates the rights of the mineworkers and that it will achieve justice for them and their families throught the awarding of compensation. It is also an opportunity to encorage meaningful corporate accountability by mining houses in the future with respect to their legal obligations to protect workers by preventing and treating lung disease in the mines.
